Earthquakes and Volcanoes and End Times…Oh My!

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Tell me that you’re not just a tiny bit concerned with the string of recent natural disasters that keep popping up on Earth’s surface like pimples on a choc-o-holic?

To refresh your memory, we’ve had multiple monster earthquakes in Haiti, China, Chile, and other places, volcanoes spewing ash across the European sky, even sinkholes that are swallowing cars!

I wish I wouldn’t have watched the 2012 movie, because now every time Mother Earth reshuffles the deck in real life, I get big screen Blu-ray flashbacks of L.A. folding up and collapsing like a cheap taco.

So what does it all mean? Well that, of course, depends on your perspective. From one standpoint, you could argue that natural disasters have been happening all over the world since the beginning of time – therefore we all should stop freaking out and chill out about end of days stuff.

On the other hand, as Christians we believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God, and since every single prophecy in Scripture has been fulfilled to the letter except the “game over” ones that point to the future, I think there is valid cause for concern if there is a connection.

Is there a connection? I’ll lay out the evidence, then you can decide for yourself:

Later as he was sitting on Mount Olives, his disciples approached and asked him, “Tell us, when are these things going to happen? What will be the sign of your coming, that the time’s up?”

Jesus said, “Watch out for doomsday deceivers. Many leaders are going to show up with forged identities, claiming, ‘I am Christ, the Messiah.’ They will deceive a lot of people. When reports come in of wars and rumored wars, keep your head and don’t panic. This is routine history; this is no sign of the end. Nation will fight nation and ruler fight ruler, over and over. Famines and earthquakes will occur in various places. This is nothing compared to what is coming (Matthew 24:3-8).

And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately. Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in many parts of the world, as well as famines. But this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come (Mark 13:7-8).

When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.” Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven (Luke 21:9-11).

In my opinion, the level and frequency of natural disasters this past year sounds a lot like what Jesus is telling us in these passages. Couple that with scientific speculation about erratic plate tectonics, and we got ourselves a whole mess-o things to keep us up at night.

But remember that the point of these passages is not TO get our blood pressure up…quite the opposite actually. In the midst of Jesus’ words on wars and natural disasters, don’t miss His counsel:

don’t panic

keep your head and don’t panic

do not be frightened

The word for ‘frightened’ here is not the idea of being scared, rather it is a picture of deep terror and crying aloud out of panic. Sort of an “AAAAAAAAAGH!!! HEEEEEELP ME!!!”

Not only are we not to panic, but we also need to be ready for when the big stuff really does start to go down. Friends…being ready is not obsessing about what might or might not happen. Being ready is-

-making sure you are right with God by trusting in Jesus Christ alone for salvation

-living each day in the light of Jesus’ promised return, which means loving God and people with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength

-passing along the Bible’s warnings about the last days and sharing the message of the gospel as the only true “end times survival strategy” and living His Cause-THE Cause-of making disciples who make disciples.

I don’t know about you, but just keeping myself busy with those three things leaves zero time to hide my head under the covers and hope that happy days will come back to stay.

Or in the words of my friend Greg Stier…reach out, don’t freak out!

Thank you Lord Jesus, because if it really is the end of the world as we know it, I really do feel fine!

Flash Point
Ask your friends if they think all the natural disasters are signs of the end times, then transition the conversation into what the Bible teaches about the return of Christ and the accompanying warnings.

Accelerant

And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light (Romans 13:11-12).

Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near (James 5:7-8).

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God (1 John 4:7).

I am an Alien

Soul Fuel

I am an Alien

Do you believe in aliens? Surveys show that more and more folks are open to the idea that we are not alone in this ginormous universe…that lurking out there – or maybe even here – are beings that are definitely different in nature and not at home on this planet.

Like Teletubbies – right? I mean, if Tinky Winky and Dipsy who annoyingly repeat the phrase “Bibberly cheese!” aren’t aliens, I’m not sure what would qualify…

Then there’s the new Sci-Fi series that has a lot of people talking called V . The V stands for “visitor” – as in aliens who are “visiting” Earth, but it seems pretty clear that they are not here to chill out and try and figure out great mysteries like why so many humans get into arguments over Edward and Jacob.

The visitors are on a mission to conquer the planet, and this just might be…

The end of humanity! Nooooooooo!!! (Cue the epic music.)

Personally, I like being an alien. Not that its always easy, but having a “stranger in a strange land” mentality helps me get why life on planet Earth just seems so messed up at times.

Don’t worry, I haven’t lost my mind – not yet anyway. I call myself an alien because that’s what God calls Christians:

Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us (1 Peter 1:10-12).

The day that I trusted in Jesus Christ as my only hope of salvation, something incredible happened. I ceased being just a person and became a child God. I was freed from the chains of humanity that would have you believe that joy and contentment can come from anything in this world. My true citizenship and home is in heaven, so my life is now an alien journey on planet Earth.

On the show V , the aliens are there to distract, deceive, and ultimately destroy the native folks, and that is obviously why the Christian kind of “visitor” is on a completely different mission. Our task is to:

Live an exemplary life among the natives so that our actions will refute their prejudices. Then they’ll be won over to God’s side and be there to join in the celebration when he arrives (1 Peter 2:12, The Message).

Isn’t that incredible? As believers in Jesus Christ, we get to show our “alien-ness” by loving the unloved, forgiving our offenders, and passing along the greatest message in all the universe:

Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said. He was seen by Peter and then by the Twelve. After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died (1 Corinthians 16:3-6).

This gospel message is also alien, because it wasn’t invented by any human mind. The gospel is from the mind of God and is the power of God. It is capable of transforming any guilt-ridden, hopeless life into unbelievable meaning, purpose, and value.

Are you feeling a bit alienated and alone at times? Unfortunately, that’s a part of following Christ. To feel not at home and rejected by a culture that cares only about selfish personal happiness and limitless pleasure is natural when you dare 2 share a Christ-like life and the gospel message. But remember that no matter how dark and lonely the path, there is an amazing end to the journey – then they’ll be won over to God’s side and be there to join in the celebration when he arrives.

The end for us aliens is actually just the beginning! Jesus Christ is returning to gather all His followers, and there is going to be a homecoming party that is beyond your wildest imagination.

I’m sure you’re familiar with the common alien phrase: “Take me to your leader.”

Well, fellow alien…let’s turn that around and ask our friends and family this: “Would you like to meet my Leader?”

Flash Point
Talk to your friends about alien movies and why they like or don’t like them. Use that discussion as a springboard to talk about how Christians are called “aliens” in the Bible and what that means – especially in terms of the “alien” message of the gospel.

Accelerant

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth (Hebrews 11:13).

What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

“Therefore come out from them
and be separate, says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
and I will receive you.”
“I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty”
(2 Corinthians 6:16-18).

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light (1 Peter 2:9).

God’s Facebook.

Monday, April 12th, 2010

I have been spending large amounts of time on Facebook lately, and have been thinking, what does God think of this? While a portion of my time on the popular social network is spent witnessing and sharing the word with my friends, it is easy to get hooked and the next thing you know, you are playing the applications…. By the way, I just finished a mission on the Mafia Wars app woohoo level 74…sorry bout that. Do you see what I mean? How did that happen?
While the games are probably not going to result in the end of me or losing my salvation, they do chip away at my relationship with Jesus Christ. In the book of Matthew, Jesus was speaking about the love between a man and his family, and that same man and God.
Jesus said that ” He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.” Matthew 10:39 NKJV
While he was speaking directly about a man’s choice between a family of unbelievers and serving God in spite of the trouble at home that may arise.
I am not speaking about a family matter here but rather a social matter. If I am actively choosing to spend time on Facebook, instead of time in the Word, what kind of message am I sending to God? I mean, God knows my heart right? Most of the time my heart is probably in the right place, mostly. You see the internet and social sites are very intriguing and can arguably be put to great use. The problem is do we put it to great use? So easily the things that maybe we mean for good, start out that way, but rarely do they stay that way. Satan often likes to take opportunities like this to gain a foothold in our lives, if we are not careful. The first part of that scripture mentioned above says “he who finds his life will lose it…” I’ll tell you this, just as any other addiction, it is easy to get lost in it, and the next thing you know, everything else, including your life is lost. Now I am not saying Facebook will result in the loss of your life, be it spiritual or otherwise, I am simply saying that distractions are always the things that get us off of that straight and narrow road.

Earlier in the book of Matthew, Jesus also said,
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” Matthew 7:13-14 NKJV.
I believe Jesus was saying here that the way to destruction and spiritual separation from God comes in many forms. Many different things lead to our wandering off from that path, during the course of our lives. It is not always easy to toe the line and walk the path that Jesus has called us to walk on and ultimately live on. We will stumble, we will fall. We must not give up or give in.

I know that the youth group probably gets tired of me hammering this in, but here goes again. Paul EXHORTED (Exhortation
EXHORTA’TION, n. The act or practice of exhorting; the act of inciting to laudable deeds; incitement to that which is good or commendable. 1. The form of words intended to incite and encourage. 2. Advice; counsel.) us;
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:1-2 NKJV.
Now, I know that my friends list contains most of you on here, but the real question, how many of us have Jesus on that list? He is more than a friend, and closer than a brother. I challenge all of you to use some of your time on that site, to share the gospel, in the open with a friend today.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

More than one way to God?

2 Samuel 7:22 CEV LORD All-Powerful, you are greater than all others. No one is like you, and you alone are God. Everything we have heard about you is true.

You see in the the bible, God warned that we were not to worship other gods before him.

Exodus 20:3-6 CEV Do not worship any god except me. 4 Do not make idols that look like anything in the sky or on earth or in the ocean under the earth. 5 Don’t bow down and worship idols. I am the LORD your God, and I demand all your love. If you reject me, I will punish your families for three or four generations. 6 But if you love me and obey my laws, I will be kind to your families for thousands of generations.

Isn’t is funny (not really) how people will try to make their own heaven or god? There is only one God! The human race has tried since very early in history, to make a god of their own, a way to worship something, or someone, to achieve some sort of life or state, that would make their lives more complete. David was praying to God when he made the statement above. He acknowledged that God was All powerful, he was greater than all others….others? Other who?

Other gods!

Many times Israel fell back into sin by doing this. They would create their own idols, and would worship them. They were failing at keeping the laws, so they decided that rather than serve the one true God, they would instead create a “god” that they could serve, on their terms.
God is sovereign. To break that word down, it means this; Sovereignty
The right of God to do as He wishes (Psalm 50:1; Isaiah 40:15; 1 Tim. 6:15) with His creation. This implies that there is no external influence upon Him and that He also has the ability to exercise His power and control according to His will. God does not want us to seek to do things on our own, he wants to be a part of our lives. Our free will often prevents this. Our free will leads to things that often take us away from God and often leads to us putting substitutions for his place in our lives.

There is only one way to God, through his Son Jesus Christ. Without acknowledging his place in our lives, we are simply trying to supplant him.

Maybe you are reading this and like me, have spent time being a good guy, or doing the right thing, and thinking this is good enough. We are not righteous, we can do nothing to earn our way “in”. This is an invitation only group. The wonderful thing about this group? You are all invited. Jesus said;

John 14:6 CEV “I am the way, the truth, and the life!” Jesus answered. “Without me, no one can go to the Father.

There is no nirvana, no reincarnation (God made you in his likeness, why would he make us into something that was not his likeness later?) And, being a good guy, helping little old ladies across the street will only get you a merit badge in the Boy Scouts. none of these things will get you into Glory. We have to acknowledge first, that we have sinned, we all have fallen short, we cannot hope to please God without faith. Faith that his Son died on the cross at Calvary, to make a way that we could be reconciled to God. WE ALL have been far from God, by believing Christ died for your sins, and living your life as such, we are assured that we all have an inheritance in the Kingdom of God. Without God, without accepting that Jesus died on the cross for you, there is no hope.

If reading this and watching that video, sparked something inside you, a longing to really be connected to a God who loves you so much that he was willing to give his only son, on the cross so that we can be redeemed, then please, say this simple prayer.

“Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from you. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward you. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

If you decided to repent of your sins and receive Christ today, welcome to God’s family. Now, as a way to grow closer to Him, the Bible tells us to follow up on our commitment.

* Get baptized as commanded by Christ.
* Tell someone else about your new faith in Christ.
* Spend time with God each day. It does not have to be a long period of time. Just develop the daily habit of praying to Him and reading His Word. Ask God to increase your faith and your understanding of the Bible.
* Seek fellowship with other followers of Jesus. Develop a group of believing friends to answer your questions and support you.
* Find a local church where you can worship God.

Forgiven.

I cannot wait to meet Jesus face to face.

John 8:4-11 CEV Then they said, “Teacher, this woman was caught sleeping with a man who isn’t her husband. 5 The Law of Moses teaches that a woman like this should be stoned to death! What do you say?” 6 They asked Jesus this question, because they wanted to test him and bring some charge against him. But Jesus simply bent over and started writing on the ground with his finger. 7 They kept on asking Jesus about the woman. Finally, he stood up and said, “If any of you have never sinned, then go ahead and throw the first stone at her!” 8 Once again he bent over and began writing on the ground. 9 The people left one by one, beginning with the oldest. Finally, Jesus and the woman were there alone. 10 Jesus stood up and asked her, “Where is everyone? Isn’t there anyone left to accuse you?” 11 “No sir,” the woman answered. Then Jesus told her, “I am not going to accuse you either. You may go now, but don’t sin anymore.”

Though this woman was deserving of death, at least in the eyes of the Mosaic law, (she was only part of the equation, where was the man whom she had sinned with, without a conspirator, how could she have been caught in adultery?)<!–more–> She was brought up on charges immediately, in the hopes that this would move Jesus to some sort of action that would lead to his breaking the law himself, instead, he simply bowed down and began sort of writing in the dirt, nobody knows what he wrote, but he spoke as he wrote. Maybe he was writing the law so that they could see it, maybe he was simply doodling, who knows! In the meantime, the Messiah, had come to the aid of someone who did not know him, and showed something that this person probably had been devoid of certainly in her adult life, LOVE, not physical love, but agape love. This is the kind of love that we all say that we have for others, but really cannot show.

Agape love is defined as such; The Greek word agape is often translated “love” in the New Testament. How is “agape love” different from other types of love? The essence of agape love is self-sacrifice. Unlike our English word “love,” agape is not used in the Bible to refer to romantic or sexual love. Nor does it refer to close friendship or brotherly love, for which the Greek word philia is used. Nor does agape mean charity, a term which the King James translators carried over from the Latin. Agape love is unique and is distinguished by its nature and character.

Though Jesus had yet to make that physical sacrifice, it very well could have happened there. You see, these men were ready to start throwing the stones (stones are a type of judgment). It very well could have been that some of those same men had been secretly meeting with this person, and committing the same sin that they had just caught her in. They may have been under the impression that by letting her go, they could some day be in the same predicament. no matter why they were so ready to kill her, the important thing is this, Jesus stood in the gap between her and her accusers, just as he does for us.

Satan has been called the accuser of the brethren, and yet, we have a defense.Just as this woman had a defense against her accusers. Jesus is that face of love, that person whom we are to emulate as Christians, those who are attempting to be Christ-like. The last couple of verses of that piece of scripture are very telling.

10 Jesus stood up and asked her, “Where is everyone? Isn’t there anyone left to accuse you?” 11 “No sir,” the woman answered. Then Jesus told her, “I am not going to accuse you either. You may go now, but don’t sin anymore.”

You see Jesus very well could have accused her and he would have been right to do so, but, instead, he showed Mercy, he was the face of Love. Just as a mother or father might chastise a child, Jesus said, go on now, but, don’t do it again. Very Simple. Walk it out.

Daily we are tempted with the opportunity to sin against God, and we have two choices obviously. We can do as our flesh wants, have our fun, or we can do those things that are pleasing to God. When we sin, it is imperative that we seek God, repent, and then go and sin no more.
